Are rosewood & ebony fingerboards stained during the manufacturing process?

I think it depends on the fingerboard. If it's appearance warrants it, then I think most builders will dye it to "even it up".

With certain builders, the answer is absolutely yes. I have been told by a reliable source that Collings does not do this. Hope this is helpful.

I'm almost certain the ebony was NOT stained on my OM-2HG. It was very dark but there were a few slightly lighter streaks, barely visible unless in direct light. I for one prefer the look of undyed ebony and rosewood, as there is something artificial looking about the dyed ebony and rosewood. Once you know what to look for, you can tell that it's dyed as it just has a certain look.
