I am going to a little overnight party and Jam this weekend. I would like to take My D1-A and another lacquer guitar with me. The lows have been in the mid 40s around here. Is that too cold do you think? I usually keep them in a room with a temp of 65-70. I really want to take them but I don't want to ruin my finish.

I know it's the temp shock that is most important but how long do you think it takes to acclimate? I mean it is in the 40s at night and 60s-70s during the day. That seems like a big jump but it's somewhat gradual of course. Do you think if it was just outside (in the case) through those temp changes it would be cool?

I see guys at Bluegrass festivals out with their guitars in these temps but I'm a bit nervous.

Thank You for your opinions.

A good insulated case cover is a big help, Colorado case company has good ones. Probably too short notice for you to get one. Plus they have back pack straps which are always nice at a festival.

I also cover my car windows with reflective poly tarp sunscreens at festivals. Putting them on the outside of the windows is actually more effective. Stays nice and cool during the heat of the day if the guitar is in there for a while. Covering the case in a down comforter when it's in the car is a good way to go as well. I always did that before I got a case cover, and even with the cover I still put an extra comforter on the case in the car.

Like you said sudden shift in temp is the biggest culprit for finish cracking. I would still be pretty cautious in the low '40's. If the top feels cold I would probably put it back in the case.

Thanks for the advice Flat. I will probably try to just keep it as gradual as possible. I can probably stash it inside during the day so the heat won't be an issue I just don't want to get it too cold too quick ya know.
