Any of you guys or gals know what stain Collings uses on their mahogany? Method of staining? Color of stain? Thanks.

Eric-
This is not to answer your question(s) but just a comment. I know for a fact that because of the dark staining of the mahogany they use, they charge a little extra for Ivoroid binding (my OM1A has it) because they have to tape it up really well. If not, the stain can get on the Ivoroid binding and they have to change it out. I guess that's why the "norm" for a mah side/back is toroise binding. I've always wondered why they can't stain the mahogany first before the binding is installed. It probably just doesn't work that way in the process.

Ace,

That's a good point. And on a sunburst, they must scrape the ivoroid binding after it's sprayed.

Some manufactures don't stain their mahogany (Larrivee, Goodall?). I like the dark look and wonder if they're using a red or brown tint or other.

I really like the way Colling's stains their mahogany on their guitar's. The one's I've seen sure seem to have a bit of red going on. I tried to duplicate that color on a mahogany dred that I built. I got the color pretty close, using powder aniline dyes.

Tell me more about the dyes...buying, mixing, using them...any info will be a help. I'll be trying to stain some mahogany in the future. Smile

Eric I just got home, it's late and I have to hit the sack. I'll give you some info about the analine dye tomorrow.

Frank.
