Hello,
I'm currently playing D'Addario EJ17s on my D2HG and D'Addario EXP17s on my D1G. I would like try a string that will add warmth to both of my guitars. Will John Pearse PBs do the trick? I'm a wanna be flat picker if that helps in steering me in the right direction.

Thanks
Kevin

The search is over! The John Pearse PB Mediums #700M are a perfect match for my D2HG. TONE, TONE, and more TONE! Just what I was looking for. The D'Addario EJ17s sound a little too bright, to my ears, for the first few days and settle in nicely after some playing. But, the John Pearse give me the tone I'm looking for on the first day.

Doc Holiday,
Thanks for the recommendation on the 80/20s. I'll give them a try too.

Kevin -

I'm a confirmed JP Phosphor user on my D28 and my DS2H. I've tried the 80/20s and they are good as well, but my ear keeps taking me back to the phosphors. Now, on my mahogany CJ, I'm using the JP Phosphor lights. Just seems that the mahogany is so much more responsive, the medims are too much and it's too easy to over drive them. The D'Addario's have always left me wanting more.

Try DR Sunbeams. Roundcore, easy to play, and very warm and resonant.

I read somewhere that D'Addario makes the strings for JOhn Pearse. I have no idea if this is accurate but from what I have read there are only a few true string makers left and most of what we buy is just different packaging of the same strings.

Anyone have any info on this?

Mike

I am partial to S.I.T (Stay In Tune)manufactured in Akron Ohio, Royal Phos. Bronze, they are very warm sounding & maintain a very even sound for a good length of time, they do not have the overly
shimmery sound when you first put them on,more like a typical set would sound after a week of play, I prefer a little less lively sound right out of the box, that holds up for 3 to 6 weeks depending on number of gigs, jams, rehearsals etc.

Tried 'em all, too many brands and alloys and coatings to keep track of, and I keep coming back to Pearse PB. It's been 20 years now. 80/20's are good, too, but I find a little more presence in the PB's. tom

Different strokes for different folks......

Read this thread, and at my last string change on the OM1ACut Varnish, I tried a set of John Pearse Phosphor Bronze lights in place of my usual D'Addario Phosphor Bronze lights. While the JP's sounded very good, and were a bit more balanced and with slightly more overtones, I definitely missed the greater clarity of the D'Addario's. I don't find the D'Addarios overly bright on my OMs. What I hear is the increased clarity, with brillance that is not harsh, and with a greater dynamic quality.

YMMV, no doubt it's somewhat guitar dependent, etc., etc.
