I am wondering how heavy a string is recommended for the 0001. I have been using Lights or extra lights. I assume mediums shouldn't be a problem?
Thanks in advance for your response.

According to the Collings website, you should stick to light guage strings. They indicate that a pyramid bridge doesn't offer as much gluing surface as a belly bridge.

More than that, I think you will have better response with light guage. You surely don't need the slight volume increase you might get from mediums.

Based on the sound of my 000-2H with light strings, I would not be worried about damage to the guitar from playing it with mediums, as much as structural damage to the house if I played it indoors.

I can't see any need to risk using mediums.

I have noticed, though, that PB strings on the 000-2H go dead more quickly than on my other guitars. Or is this just hot sticky weather plus playing it a lot 'cause I'm so excited about having it? And it definitely wants PB strings. I tried a set of 85/15s and it was like playing it under a quilt, compared to the PBs.

Peter.

On my 000-2H, I've had good results with D'Addario EXP and I've just tried my first set of Elixir Nanowebs. I'm not sure there's an appreciable difference between those two, but the EXP's seem a little punchier, closer to a new set of their regular PB.

I like the left-hand feel of coated strings and I guess I'm getting lazy to boot. I'd rather spend $12 a set and change strings every 4-8 weeks than $4 a set and change every two weeks. Seems just about a wash, money-wise. Actually, I seem to be able to tolerate a dead set of EXPs for longer than I can a dead set of regular PB. If I played out more I'm sure I would change more often as well.

I tried mediums on my 000-2H and actually ended up being happier with the Light gauges. I thought it would bring even more tone and projection to the guitar, but it seemed to have the opposite effect. I put lights back on it and was blown away again. Hope this helps,

Craig

Hi. If you tune down 1/2 a step or more the total string tension using d'Addario mediums is less than using their lights at stadard pitch, according to the tension chart on their site. I've used mediums tuned down and liked them, but quit doing so because I was worried about widening the string slots for lights. Maybe a foolish worry, I don't know.

Really guys, Collings does not, under any circumstances suggest using 000's on their 12 frets. It has to do with the tension on the bridge.
