I just bought a great D-1A a couple of days ago and was wondering about the adirondack top. I read about some talk about the grading of ad. tops and just wanted some clarification. My top has some lines in it and the matching of the two pieces is slightly different in color, one being slightly lighter than the other. Is that o.k.? The guitar sounds fantastic. So I guess my question is this: is the rating or grading of a ad. top purely asthetics, because it sounds great?

Collings Ad top grading is purely aesthetic. You pay a lot of money to not have those lines.

I think Collings started to grade their Adirondack only from last year or so…. Check Laurence Juber’s OM1AC, it got more of those “lines” then many Adirondack Collings. And I guess Collings will only offer to have their best sounding top for LJ.

The Grading is only cosmetic, my OM1A is now 5 years old an it sound great!!
