I've used light gauge strings on my guitars for years, D'Addario Phospher Bronze. My CJ came with lights when I bought it from Mandolin Bros. about a year and a half ago. I see on the Collings site that CJ's ship with mediums. I'd like to give them a try but since the guitar has always had lights I'm not sure if I'll have any problems. I wouldn't think so but thought I'd ask and make sure.
I fingerpick about 70% of the time so I suppose that might make things a little more difficult. What are you CJ owners using and for what style of playing? George. |

I have always used John Pearse Phosphor Bronze mediums on my CJ. You should be able to make the switch with only a little tightening of the truss rods. You'll find it has a lot more sound with meds. It is what the CJ's are built for.

I pretty much use D'Addario mediums exclusively. The guitar is more than strong enough to handle them and I like the lower amount of buzz.

Thanks for the replies. The action on my CJ is very comfortable with lights but I'm not too concerned about raising it a hair by switching to mediums. I'll probably give 'em a try now that I know the guitar can handle them. Do you folks fingerpick or flatpick? Do you prefer lights for fingerpicking? I suppose I could take out a second mortgage on the house and buy another CJ so I could keep lights on one and mediums on the other....
