My Intellitouch Tuner have problem tuning the Low E string with my Collings and also Bourgoeis, it always display a "B" or display nothing at all, I have to play a harmonic to tune that string.
It doesnt' seem to have the same problem with my Gibson L00.. Do you have similar problem? Whats you way to deal with it? |

I was shown the solution for that problem by the owner of Intelitouch.
When you are tuning the low E, pluck it very lightly using the bare flesh of your thumb, rather than a pick. You will be amazed at how easy you can pluck the string and get it to register. Sometimes it helps to dampen the other strings with your left hand. I hope this helps. Good luck |

I second what Michael said. Pluck the string very lightly while muting the other strings. It also seems to help if you pluck close to the 12th fret. You seem to get a better fundamental to harmonic ratio there. I find a pick works better for me than my fingernail.

I don't have an intelitouch tuner but I have had the same problem. I guess Collings' just have too much overtone! Thanks for the tip, I'll try it next time I tune.

I find I need to use the 12th fret harmonic for tuning the low E on most guitars - not just the Collings. It's not a problem, really.

Ed,
I've had the same problem with my Intellitouch. I just play a harmonic on that string - problem solved. |

Just got my guitar back from Bryan... The Intellitouch can now detect the Low E string as well...
Not sure if its the new bridge or the Ivory Saddle and Nut.... |

I have the same problem with the "B" showing up when the Low "E" is played.

I found a "trick" that makes a huge difference. If I strike the low E string near the front the sound hole (i.e. close to the finger board) my intellitouch registers an E 90% of the time.
Seems I heard this here or on Flatpick-L. It really has helped me appreciate my Intellitouch more (and cuss less). I like to fine tune with the harmonics, but sometimes when the harmonics are in tune, the chords don't sound quite right. Another trick I like is to tune based on the key I'm playing in. If I'm playing in G, I'll work my way down the strings tuning to the note that makes up the G chord. Weird, maybe, but it works for me. 2005 D1A 2003 KM 380 |

Hi All,
Yep, this is a natural problem with these tuners. I use the same tricks mentioned here to get my E string "noticed" by the tuner. I have one also and use it almost exclusively (except when I am at my buddy's house). But, if I ever have to buy another clip-on tuner, and I may soon, just for convenience, I am definitely going to buy the KORG AW-1 MICRO CLIP-ON Tuner. My buddy has both and I use his KORG all the time when I'm with him. I do like the Intellitouch...but I now prefer the Korg to the Intelletouch. The KORG is just better at picking up the strings. Priced about the same. Regards, MAc This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mac, |

I was teaching a small workshop (6 people) recently and we all had the Intellitouch. Someone yelled out that he had problems with the low E being picked up. I told him to pick the low E string harmonic on the 12th fret. It's funny how they all (at the same time) did it and in unison, said "Ahhh". It's not really a "problem".
I actually use the harmonic on all the strings when I tune up. That's just me though. Ace ----------------------------------------------- My Collings family: OM1A Custom (deep body), 000-2GC, 16" Archtop, & T.N.O. (The Next One ) |

Thanks everyone for the comment! I tune the low E harmonic on the 12th fret but if I play the low E open, it will be a little flat. Does that mean my guitar's intonation have problem?
