Just a note for anyone looking for a good luthier / technician. I just had a total fret job on my D2H done by Mark at Fat Sound Guitars in Cary, NC (one of only 2 dealers in the state) and he did an excellent, clean job. Fretwork seems to be a specialty of his, since he is a Buzz Feiten approved tech, too. Of course a full fret job requires a new setup, and he also did that just as well. Extremely clean work, and I'm very happy with it.

Since it isn't guitar pricing, can you give us a ballpark price on a fret job?

I don't really know the going rate, but I think you get what you pay for. 3 years ago I was going to get a D1 refretted by TJ Thompson, a highly respected luthier/repairman, and it was $400, which is about the highest I've ever heard of. This one I posted about was $265, which I think is his going rate for a total dread fret / setup job. I'm guessing that you could get it done by someone for around $175-200, but I'd rather pay higher and be highly satisfied. What would you do if the job wasn't done well, redo it? Probably others will have additional input

Thanks for the info. I guess a bound neck may add a bit of cost. I agree; don't go with the lowest bidder on a fret job!!

This makes me think of a question...whenever I need to get a refret on my OM-2HG, how will the luthier clean up and/or touch up the finish on the neck that goes over the fret wire that shows on the sides of the fingerboard? Will he just refinish those areas of the neck or leave it bare?
