I'm getting a Sony N707 minidisc player/recorder for Christmas and I hope to use it for recording some of my guitar playing. Could anyone recommend a microphone for it? I need something fairly portable that you know works with the Sony md players. Specific model name/number and where I might purchase would be appreciated.

TIA,
Allen

Thanks for the input. I ended up ordering a Sony mic from Crutchfield. It should be here in a couple days or so.

Allen,

I use a Sharp SR60 with a pair of stereo mini omni and/or cardioid mics. The MD recorder has a stereo mic input and on-the-fly level control (both lacking on many others) and is available (new) on eBay for $130. I know you're getting the Sony but you might want to check and see if it has on-the-fly level control.

The mics are available in several configurations, including very compact single point stereo T-mics that plug directly into the recorder. The omnis on 72" cords run about $60. If you go for cardioids don't get the cheapest. A stereo pair of AT831's are available from Sound Profesionals for $119 and well worth the price. So....you can get very good mics for anywhere between $50 and $120 You'll be amazed at the quality of recordings you get. The only thing I'd add, since you're going with Sony, is to look at other mics before buying their 907 single point stereo mic. I tried one and every configuration I mentioned above, including the T-mic, is better. IMO, of course.

No affiliation, but highly recommended.

cjd18, thanks for the input. I looked around for a Sharp MD recorder before I bought the Sony, but couldn't find anything locally and I'm wary of buying electronics off ebay. So, I went with the Sony. I had heard good things from others about the Sony 907 mic so that's what I got. It's all wrapped and under the tree right now so I won't know anything about how well it works until Wednesday. I looked at some of the T mics on the net too. It seemed all of them were powered by the recorder instead of supplying their own power in terms of a battery like the 907. I'm planning to use the mic with my laptop computer too and wasn't sure the battery-less mics would work. The MD player will primarily be used for compiling music mixes from my cd collection to listen to at work. I just figured I'd get a mic to do a little scratchpad type thing with it at times. Thanks again for the input.

Allen,

Sound's like you got the perfect setup for what you want to do. The Sony is a great recorder and you'll be able to use the 907 mic into the computer without buying a separate battery module. You'll be very impressed with the results. Best of luck!
