Looking for an acoustic amp and have heard a lot of positives about this amp. Any opinions?
My needs - small PA for low volume stuff, at least two channels and enough power to serve as a monitor in a band setting (with drums and keys). People don't know what they want, so they want what they know. |

Hi John. Not only am I a fan, but I'm an owner as well. I use this amp for my small coffee shop gigs and never put the volume past 12 o'clock. I've used it recently in a backyard gig with about 80 people and it was easily heard, covering my vocal and acoustic duties. I think I have the version before the most recent. It has a bunch of knobs that I don't know how to use - I pretty much keep the EQ flat. But the sound is great: warm and transparent. I love that it is light and easy to carry around as well. I use the two mic inputs, though you can use 1/4" jacks if you have a pickup on your acoustic. I've never used it in a band setting so I can't comment, but I think it'd be fine.

Thanks Nick - looks like we have some similar instruments. Aside from voice, I need it to handle;
1)Adi/mahog CJ with a K&K PWM 2)Composite Acoustics Bluegrass with PWM and/or Baggs M1Active 3) National Resorocket with a National/lace magnetic 4) National Mandolin (wondrfu thing) with whatever pickup I find works 5) maybe even low volume keyboard I know a small PA would be best, but by the time I get the Speakers and a good board (QSC looks good) I have about 150#s of gear and it's just too much for a lot of settings. If you're covering 80 people outdoors that's pretty darned good for a 32# rig. People don't know what they want, so they want what they know. |

I have the Schertler David, the little brother to the Unico, and it works like a charm for my uses as a stage monitor as well as small PA for guitar and vocals...I don't use it in a larger band setting, but I think Schertler amps overall are superb. I did find, btw, that withe the K&K pickup I use the David actually worked a bit better...at least in my opinion, because the gain and impedance issues seemed not an issue at all with the David, and the Unico I tried...well, I had to really dial in (or out, more accurately) the gain to get that wonderful sound I wanted.

I have a Schertler Unico that I bought when I got my Collings OOO-2H with Lr Baggs and RMC brass pickups in the bridge. They sound fantastic together. I sold my California Blonde at that time, because the Unico gave me better sound and was easier to carry around.
Of course, now Ive got my Collings OOO-2H up for sale on eBay, but the Unico will stay with me, because I plug my microphones right into it, and play my Collings D-2H into the mikes. It's also great for vocals. Warm, natural, almost tube sound. Ten thumbs up |
