I have a D1-A and I wanted to do some recording. I am looking at 4 track recorders but not sure if digital or analog is best for solo acoustic recording. Anyone suggest anything? Also what mics are good for this as well. Thanks.

An inexpensive digital 4-track will beat the pants off a cheap analog 4-track sonically and for editing capabilities. (When you get into $20K analog v. $20K digital then there's some serious competition between the two.)

If you're not spending a lot of money, as a general rule the best mics for acoustic guitar home recording are small-diaphragm condenser mics, preferable 2 of the same kind. Avoid large-diaphragm mics on ac. gtr. as they can often sound muddy and often need EQ. Inexpensive EQ's can sound pretty lame, so it's best to make sure you don't need them. Small diaphragms are usually more accurate and detailed, and sound fine with no EQ.

The real recording guru around here is elambo -- he's a pro recording engineer. Maybe he'll chime in.

I wouldn't add much. You've already given good advice. Stick with digital and small diaphragm mics. We could be a little more specific about brands/models if you told us your budget. I don't need to tell you this, but the more you have to spend the better it will sound. Simple, but true.

What brands or models of both recorders and mics would you suggest? I would like to spend less than $1,000 for everything I need if I can.

For a mic I have had great success with the Shure condenser beta 57 (I think that's the model.) I paid $250, but it looks like you can get them for about $140 now. For a multi-track digital you might check out the Tascam 788. It runs about $700. If anyone else has any input please post it... Good luck!

Also check out AKG C1000S. Great instrument mike for stage or recording. Musician's Friend normally has them for $199, but I think they're doing 2 for $299 now.
