Got my Mac yesterday and spent some time learning to make loops. Just used the onboard mic for the recording. What king of external mic should I use for recording? What would be the best way to set up for recording.

Try this as a USB interface (has XLR w/ phantom power and 1/4" inputs). It gets it's power from the USB port so you may want to be plugged in (if it's on a laptop) when you use it. Costs ~$100

This a fine mic for ~$100

When I track my guitar I plug the under-saddle pickup through the 1/4" input and mic the guitar with the 2020 and record two tracks panned slightly left and right. This yields a very full sound with the best of both recording methods.
