I have a Collings OM2C and an AER Domino amplifer. I recently had an IBeam installed and it sounds like a wah wah stuck in the middle position. I hear my guitar in there somewhere without the quack, so I'm happy about that. However, there is so much midrange that I have to I turn the bass and midrange all the way off on the AER and crank the treble to get a decent sound. Is there something wrong? I'm considering getting an outboard EQ, but wanted to know if others have had this experience before I spend the bucks. Thanks.

Is your iBeam active or passive?

If active, make sure you have the AER's preamp turned off.

If passive, make sure you have the AER's preamp turned on.

And you may need a good preamp either way. Also, iBeams are known to be senstive to placement. If it's not in the 'sweet spot' that can also result in sub-par sound.

That's one of the reasons I've gone with K&K. IBeam, properly installed and EQ'd is hard to beat. But K&K Pure Western Minis are right up there in natrual sound quality withoug being so picky. I have them in 4 guitars now, standard placement in all of them, and they all sound fantastic.

Keep us posted!

Could be a few things. Best to check out the simple things first.

1) If your I-Beam is passive, test things with a different cable between the guiar and the AER. A short, quality and low capacitance cable is needed. A crummy cable can cause what you are experiencing.

2) If not the cable, check placement of the picup itself. Dberch is right. The I-Beam is very sensitive to placement. Once a sweet spot is found, it works well.
