Hi,
am new to this.
just switched from archtops and 175's to a 335 looking for a new direction, and i dont like 2 mina things about the guitar (gibson 335 that is):

1. its weight
2. the seemingly "long" neck.

will the collings i-35 remedy this?

i understand the neck is shorter (meets the body at a lower fret),
that it weighs much less, and that is small (15" from bout to bout?)

Please help!

Jazzguy,

My I-35 weighs exactly 7 pounds.

Check your PMs.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for writing.

Is the body smaller than a 335?

and what about the neck and where it meets the body?

TNX!

The neck joins the body around the 17th fret, which is the same spot as it is on my Strat and Tele.

From horn to horn, the guitar is 10 5/8" wide. The widest spot is 15". I don't know how that compares to a 335, but I can say that the guitar is smaller than I expected it to be (before playing it).

Mine is likely to be available. If you have any specific questions, shoot me an email at mw0705@mac.com

Hi guys-would anyone know more about where the neck meets the body on the i-35 (as opposed to a gibson 335?)

the neck connection and the weight on the 335 is a deal breaker. i bought the guitar and after less than a week posting it for sale..

any help and info on i35's would be of GREAT help - i live in israel, and playing one before ordering is not a possibility...

Thanks!!

From looking at pictures online, it looks like the neck on the 335 joins the body around the 18th fret. But it is hard to tell, I guess. With the I-35, it's basically seamless so I think comparing the two would be difficult.

One thing I can tell you for certain ... the I-35 does weigh less. I owned a Gibson Lucille a few years back and playing it was like carrying a grand piano. No wonder B.B. sits down when he plays now. The online quote for weight on that model is 9.97 pounds (compared to 7 pounds on the I-35). I can't find any weight quotes on the other models.

Width looks like 15" on the I-35 versus 16 1/2" on the 335.

It feels like a late fifties/early sixties 335/45/55. I can't imagine any appreciable difference in tone between quilt and flame, although I imagine there have been entire discussion threads here that have batted that one back and forth. Elambo has it right- a little smaller, quite a bit lighter, and a whole lot better. tom

It definitely feels more like a 335 than a 175. I have a '53 ES-175 and these are completely different beasts. At the risk of overstating the case, I'll say that the I-35 is absolutely nothing like a vintage 175.

The I-35 is a lot slimmer, a lot lighter, and infinitely more versatile in the tone department (both relative to the 175 and the 335).

The I35 is about an inch narrower than a 335. The I35's are consistenly lighter, and to me have a much "arier" hollow sound, closer to the ES330--without the feedback! There is a huge variation in weights of the 335's--Guitarsale.com posts the weights of thier inventory--you can see the varition--over 2 lbs. variation in some cases. I previously bought a real light 335, but ditched it for my I35, which is over a pound lighter. The I35 also has a slightly longer scale length.
