OK, I know nothing about woodworking, and I haven't found dimensions, but I'm curious and I have to ask a dumb question: What happens to the rest of the mahogany block that Collings carves the one-piece back and sides of an I-35 from? Could they use them for the 290s or something?

I would be impossible to "lift" a slab out of a piece of mahogany; how would you cut the bottom of the slab? Moot point anyway - the inside of an I-35 is routed and they leave a center beam, similar to the center block in most Gibson 335s. Here is a pic of an I-35 in progress, ready for hand work.

Hi Randy,

Before I bought my I-35, I sent an e-mail to Alex Rueb of Collings to ask about the guitar's specs, and in his reply he wrote that the centre block is made of alder and is glued into the mahogany body. It may be that they leave a routed base or platform of mahogany for the alder. Not really sure.

Thank you both. I had considered both of those points, but I still had to ask! Live and learn, as another mouse said... Still, it's hard for me to imagine all that mahogany turning to dust---makes me think of the "junk" Braz that got thrown in the kiln way back when that people would gladly use now for backs/sides...

Maybe the center piece in the photo is the alder, ready for final routing of the pickup cavities.

it looks lovely. Now the question is what would it take to make it a 1 3/4 thick neck? I would love one of there
