Just saw this on Lark St. Music site about my favorite amp.
*TONE KING IMPERIAL, New, turquoise and white, the return of the original Tone king design and circuit, but I notice that the Lead channel is a more useful; you don't have to turn it up that much to get overdrive, and the tolex is pebbled- looks basically the same but stronger, a winner for sure..... |

This was one of the amps I read great things about, and really wanted to check out when I went on my amp search a while ago. I think there's another Tone King model, something with a II at the end, that got even more raves, but not sure.
I never did find a Tone King around though, and I wound up buying an old blackface deluxe reverb, for less $ I believe, before I made it out to Lark Street. Evidently lots of people love the Tone King amps. The only knock I recall reading is that they used printed circuit board construction, not point-to-point wiring, made repair more problemmatic/costly and modifications difficult. And maybe they had cheap/ flimsy input jacks??? (A few of the amps that used PCBs were accused of that, input jacks directly attached to PCB was not good for some reason; not sure about Tone King). I'm just parroting from recall, this could all be wrong, and/or nonsense. |

I have played through several and found them to be too bright sounding for my taste. I have heard other players make 'em sound great, however.

My thought on Tone King amps is do not lump them all together. The Imperial 20 watt 1x12 is THE ONE. I've tried all other versions of Comets etc. and didn't find any to my liking, just the Imperial.
