My CL Dlx was driving me mad going out of tune. With some help from Steve M. at Collings, and some experimentation, my CL is staying in tune longer. Per Steve M's suggestion, I tightened up the friction screws that hold the buttons on the drive shaft;these screws also control the friction on the tuner gears. All six of my friction screws were loose. The back and forth movement of the button during tuning works the screws loose. Perhaps this is a design trade-off, i.e., changeable buttons, and variable friction, but to me, I think Collings should offer optional tuners with no friction screws. I'll take the tuners on my D-3, which hold tune for days, over the Sperzels.

So ALOT of friction (very tight friction screws) helps to hold tune longer.

Second, the nut on the CL (and also, in retrospection, on my former I-35) is rather "sticky". The Collings nut really benefits from a good lubricant. I put Dupont Teflon dry lube on a Q-tip, then lubed the nut grooves and also the section of each string that rests in the nut grooves.

This is good but surprising news. I was told by someone at Collings that, to the best of his knowledge, the tuners where not adjustable. I always thought they were and I'm glad to read this.
