Hi. Iove my instrument and want to take care of it. I have put a fret protector under the strings on my Collings solid body. The fit is a little tight and perhaps the strings are lifted a little bit out of the nut. I may be wrong about this, but anyway, is it perfectly safe, with no problems, to use a fret protector with our Collings electrics?
If you are talking about the plastic strip like what ships with Anderson guitars, then it certainly won't hurt your guitar or strings.
However, it really isn't necessary and borders on obessive for everyday storage and use. The reason the Anderson's are shipped with the fret protector is because of the jostling and bumps that a guitar takes in shipping. It keeps the frets from digging into the strings and vice-versa. But, in normal everyday carrying and taking to gigs your guitar won't go through this kind of shock (or at least we hope not).
My opinion is that the fret protector isn't needed.
I will second the fact that a fret protector is not necessary. We've got some VERY particular folks on this site (myself included) and I don't recall any mention of the use of a fret protector. I have been playing for 46 years and never had an issue that would have been resolved by using a fret protector. BTW, peel the plastic sheets off the plastic covers and PLAY THAT THANG
