So I hear Bill is very quietly working on an amp to go with the electric guitars. Supposed to be offered encased in amazing cabinets that are be made from wood rejected for the guitars--rumor is he was offered big bucks for these rejected pieces from a big guitar company in the NE but decide to hold on to them for the amp line. anyway, my source says the circuit resembles a Dumble OD but Bill will be using only parts that are approved for the space shuttle (no tiles in this baby). Not content with 'run of the mill' wimpy boutique amps, bill's will be 200 class A watts. Pricing will be on the steep side, but nothing on this planet will touch them.

Interesting rumor. Hmmmm....wonder if they'll only be available one day of the year?

Conversely, on this day last year I'd posted something about Collings making electric guitars. A complete joke and I had no knowledge of any upcoming project for electric guitars. But today there exists a Collings electric guitar - a few models actually. So you never really know what's up his sleeve...

Man, I can't wait to get my NASA approved Collings amp. I bet it will play "Fly Me To the Moon" as soon as you plug an officially certified Collings guitar into the special jack.

Hmmm. I smell urban legend. 200 class A watts. In exactly what club might your typical collings electric owner (say me for example) play that? Yankee Stadium? the Grand Canyon (great room reverb, I bet)? Who know where the Mind of Bill might go, but electronics are waaaaaaaay far afield from luthiery. the cabinet part sounds plausible. The rest sounds like hooey. Now, 30 watts or thereabouts and I'm reaching for my credit card. But I'll wait until the unicorn comes into the clearing.

And the funny thing is that I bought a Collings electric almost exactly one year after that post. Maybe this time next year I'll have a Collings amp, too!

Not to flog the same lifeless nag, but building guitars, albeit electric, is very closely akin to building acoustic guitars. Amplifiers are an entirely different proposition. You don't hire a structural engineer to fix your teeth. Bill has obsessed (for which we should all be grateful) about guitars, wood, and their designs for over 30 years. He's a genius in his field, but this whole thing sounds bogus to this boy. How many Jim Marshall guitars have you played? Or Dumble Dreadnoughts? I know: Leo Fender, but he didn't design the amps himself. I'm going on record as saying baloney. And I own one of the first collings electrics, but I heard about their development almost a year out from guys who talk with Bill all the time. Not rumor one about amps, other than here. word is he's madly perfecting the City Limits before moving to another model (maybe that's why there are quite a few City Limits out there, and almost no I-35's. I hope I'm wrong; but that 200 watt class A thing: pure manure. An amp with that much power could literally break windows in a bar (unless Bill is also building a nuclear power attenuator). Now, I've virtually guaranteed that there will indeed be Collings amps, I'll have to retract the whole thing, and then hock more stuff to buy one of the blamed things. That's my track record, pretty much.

Is the City Limits guitar which is already in stores NOT his perfected version? Please expand on what you know.

Okay, April fool me. It isn't hard, any day of the year. As far as "perfect", as far as I"ve been able to tell Bill and the boys are ALWAYS looking for ways to make improvements. It makes sense that the newer the model, the more room for tweaking. But check the web. Quite a few CL's (although they tend to last days rather than weeks) and almost no I-35's. Coincidence? Could be. 35's are carved, and Collings archtops are notoriously scarce, and will stay that way.
