I'd suspect strings binding in the nut before tuner issues. You say "pull out of tune" - as in after bending strings? Did you go up in gauge from the stock stings that came with the guitar?

Do they have a tendency to go sharp? Or flat?

And is it all strings or just certain ones?

My 35, may it rest in peace, was solid as a rock, and I bend like a maniac on electric. I retained the original gauge (11's on top) throughout.

Mine stays in tune. Mind you, I never get more than a couple of hours playing in at a time. On the other hand, Montreal suffers from fierce swings in temperature and humidity, so I'd say the tuning is pretty stable.

...with the georgeous blue-burst. Incredibly ugly, IMHO. Eek I'll stick with my Strat. You can hold it by the neck, swing your way out of a bar fight and it'll still be in tune.

not sure what is going on. also, you ever notice that collings sets these things up more like acoustics--sure doesn't play like some of the great guitars i've played--the masterbuilt guitar from even fender are set up better.

i've tried two now and just not lucky. thanks for the responses, it has helped me with my decision

Actually, the responses have said that I-35s are rock solid, which suggests that something unique is happening with yours. I'd call or email Collings about this. I had a problem with one tuner on my CL DLX and they went WAY beyond what was necessary to fix the issue. Get them involved - it will be fixed. Alternatively, as it's a new guitar, your dealer should be more active in helping to find a solution.

As I've said in another thread, my I-35 is the finest guitar I've ever dealt with. As close to perfectly-made as I could imagine. I suppose it's possible that Collings is slipping and their production consistency for this model is loose, but that would really surprise me.

Let us know how this plays out.

My I-35 was about the worst guitar I have / had for staying in tune. And I've tried different strings (all the same size). Same results.

I brought it back and had the shop do some work on the nut. No problems now. The guitar stays in tune very well.

If you want to move your I-35, fine. But it shouldn't be because of a tuning issue. That can be fixed.

And that's why I asked if his guitar was going sharp or flat. If the nut is grabbing the strings during bends it will leave that string sharp. However, if the tuner isn't staying in place it will go flat. BOTH are easily fixable.
