I'm a little dismayed that in the article, it seems to be axiomatic that there are "good ones" and "not so good ones."
Isn't Collings electrics a little more consistent than that? |

Slightly off topic, but re. Bill Collings' ear for electric tone...
It's funny... we often assume that talented guitar makers are wonderful judges of sound, but it isn't always so. Case in point: I once had a long chat with a great guy and seriously fine musician who worked in sales for Fender from 1952 right through to the late '60s, and then rejoined Leo Fender at Music Man. This guy often used to go out to clubs with Leo Fender in the early days: Leo used to love going to see C&W and western swing bands, especially ones where the steel players, guitarists and bassists were using his gear. However, the inventor of the greatest electric guitars of the 20th century** apparently had an unfortunate habit of wandering up to the bandstand at intermission, chatting with his Fender endorsers... and then turning all the treble on their amps up to an unbearably screechy icepick-in-the-skull level, and returning to his seat with a satisfied smile on his face. I'm not in a position to comment on Bill C's ear, so I ain't gonna. ** with apologies to Ted McCarty. This message has been edited. Last edited by: peghead, |
