workmanship. tone. design. finish. wood. PRS is not nearly the guitar it was ten years ago, and Fender and Gibson have been largely resting on their laurels for decades. I'd much rather have a Don Grosh or a Tom Anderson than anything except a Collings.

My TV yellow 290 is fantastic and I was reminded of that as I rehearsed with it last night.

I don't know how anyone who has played a 290 could say that there is a lack of vibe. But to each his own.

Tone, feel, quality workmanship, did I say tone, value

I disagree about the price factor, at least as far as my 290 goes.

I played a lot of Fender guitars and a few Gibsons in the six months that I took to buy a new axe. Prices ranged from $750 to $4500.

IMO, not one of them was worth the asking price.

At $2100, the 290 was a pretty good deal.

As far as the neck-profile is concerned, I'm getting used to it. I've been playing the guitar a lot recently and I really enjoy playing it. It's an extremely well-made instrument.

Yeah,$2,100 isn't too bad for a really well made guitar these days considering what other guitars of questionable quality are going for. OK, now I'm down to 2 reasons why I don't have a Collings electric and I could shave the neck down and do a relic job on a 290....hmmmm.

Sure, if you start a NEW thread. Why not help the original poster keep this one on track...

Not coincidentally, it would be the same reasons I listed for Collings acoustics:

-Tone
-Playability
-Build Quality
-Customer Service
-Reputation

4 & 5 I already knew about, but it took an audition to figure out 1, 2 and 3. ONE audition! Couldn't get myself out the door without a case in my hand, no matter how hard I tried.

What are the issues or feelings about neck profile? Thanks!

EL,Just trying to inject some humor into the discussion hence the smiley face. I think my post is much closer to topic than replies I see all the time on other topics. My own get redirected often. It happens in real life conversations you know.....eat a peach Smile

24loar,My first comment when I played a batch of 3 different Collings electrics was....it feels like they stuck a neck from a D-2H (actually maybe a CJ is more like it) on here. It's not a big deal to most but to me I think it's a bit hefty and well, kinda non-electric ladyland.

No real issue; it's just a bit chubbier than what I had grown used to. Now that I'm more familiar with the guitar, it feels just fine.

1. Build quality (fit and finish)
2. Quality of materials used
3. Playability
4. Lightweight feel of instrument
5. Reputation for perfection

The price of an I-35 is not really outrageous, especially if you consider what it is and what it would cost for a custom built instrument made to those specs. The cost of a custom carved hollow body electric is considerably more, and you would not be able to just walk into a store (or browse the web) and find one that you could try before buying.
