Hi folks,

The Collings model 290 electric guitar has really peeked my interest.

I see that the 290 is available with either Jason Lollar P-90's or Jason Lollar humbuckers.

My question is this? Do humbuckers typically sound more like a Les Paul and the P-90's sound more like a Strat?

How would you characterize the sound of these two pickups?

What popular songs are good examples of the sounds of these two pickups?

Merry Christmas!

God bless,
"louisiana" Smile

They both sound like Gibsons and forget Strat. Not in the same ballpark. Some Les Paul models came with P-90s, such as some Jrs. (single pu), Specials (2 P-90s) and SG Les Pauls. I prefer them to dual-coil humbuckers as they are a bit more focused and fundamental. Lesley West used them with Mountain - monster tone. Humbuckers have more overtones and a wider range of sounds.

To your point about the Strat sound from a Les Paul - I once owned a Les Paul Special with 2 P-90s and I wanted a more single-coil, Strat sound so I bought a Dimario dual-coil humbucker that fit the P-90 slot without modifications and changed the tone knob to a push-pull tone knob that also switched the Dimarzio from double-coil to single-coil mode. Still sounded exactly like a Les Paul with different coloration to the tone. Not a bad sound, just not the Strat sound I hoped for.

The early Eagles' lead sound was also P90. Think "James Dean" or "Already Gone". Killer. The Fralin SP43 in the bridge position of Grosh retro classics (strat style, only manifold better) sound very much like a P90. Mongo like P90.

To which I would add Neil Young's "Black Beauty" LP that he's played for decades in Crazy Horse, and he gets some monstrous tones from those P-90s.

I have the 290 and the I35...I think they will both go when my new one is done....

A CL, quilt top, maple binding, and...P90's...

I prefer the sound of the P90's to the humbuckers...you can get more of that 'bridge quack' that I like to do...it's not a tele or a strat, but the P90's have a great tonal range as already mentioned.

Merry Xmas,

Dale
