Anyone ever try DR Rares on their Collings? I have been using EJ16's, but have thenking about trying the DR's. Any thoughts?? This would be on an OM1 by the way...
I like these strings. A guy who plays out regularly handed me a pack last year. He said he really liked how they sounded on his mahogany body guitars. I put them on my C-10 and they did seem a tad to bright until I played them down a bit. For what it is worth, I have noticed that the DR Rares can be a little too bright on my Gibson AJ with Koa body. But, on my 000-15 and Santa Cruz OM, they really come out nice after a good break-in. I think I started out putting Pearse strings on each guitar I owned or would trade for. Little by little I checked into some other brands. I still like to experiment, but I think everyone kind of has they favorites.
I haven't tried them for a decade or more, but when I did- whole box- I found them wildly uneven in quality. Some sets were as good as it gets. Some were deader than the strings I was replacing. Maybe their quality control has gotten better. I'm fond enough of Pearses that I do try a set of others now and then, but have no motive to do the DR thing again. tom
A friend gave a set of DR's to try. Put them on my CJ and they made it sound like a Taylor stuffed full of pillows. Ughhh! Guess I'm just addicted to Pearses.

Tried the rares and the sunbeams. They sounded great and lasted a long time on a D1A...and played very smooth and slinky....but the last set the low E was dead out of the water..totally dead....done with DRs....anone tried Pyramids?
I just put a set on yesterday and the D string was almost a half step flat. NOT GOOD!!!! Its a drag because I love the feel and the sound but flat strings is a deal breaker.
Interesting. I love these strings on some of my guitars. I got an NGC mahogany/Adi dread about a month ago, tried various string sets and settled on the Rares. This could be a bright guitar, maybe the same way a Collings can be a bright guitar, and I find the Rares really do it for me. I also use them on my B&H Braz SJ and a Claxton mahogany/Adi EM. They work very well for me and I've never had quality issues.
No one string brand works for every guitar and finding the right string can take some time. That said, I always try DR Rare's on my guitars and have found them to work great on some, maybe not as well on others.

The mind, or what remains of mine, boggles. I'm just hoping the, well you know, deserves to be spoken of in the same paragraph. the CJA I have now is not that far off, really, and the new 'un will have to top it from jumpstreet. Maybe October. OR Thanksgiving. Whatever. That Baton Rouge was one that definitely had me violating at least two, maybe three, of the seven deadly sins. Oink. tom
