Pirate: those marks are where a grizzly bear decided to scratch the tree. Well, maybe not.

But it is character. Nice.

tom,
Is the double negative accidental or do they, in fact, hide grain?? Sorry, I'm anal too. Smile

Sonoman, isn't it just grand to be able to enjoy the simpleness of a warm tasty meal, go outside for some fresh air, play guitar and watch a ball game.
My wife sometimes looks at me and shakes her head all the while smiling and saying to me,
"You are such a little boy."

In defense of Red Streaks:

My Bourgeois OM-150 has one of the cleanest Adi tops I've ever seen. In contrast, my OM1ACut Varnish has fairly prominent red streaks, however, they are uniform in appearance and contrast nicely with the tint of the Varnish top. I like the appearance of both tops equally. When they're "right", the red streaks are definitely cool in my book Cool And they definitely do NOT impact tone.

You know, guitar top wood is kinda like women. Sometimes prettier isn't better, just nicer to look at. I've known some very attractive examples - of women and guitars - in which satisfaction decreased significantly upon close contact. Big Grin

One could say that, with the price we pay for Collings guitars, one might expect perfection in both aesthetics and tone. I honestly care far less about appearance and more about performance - for a guitar, that is. The best sounding adi tops I've ever heard have the streaking in them. Why? Don't know. Just anecdotal observation.

Unbelievable!!!!!

I just pulled my D1A Varn out to play......Holy Cow....there are multiple red streaks all throughout the Adi Top. Honestly, I have never ever noticed it before, or paid it any mind. And I will say, if there is a better sounding Guitar, I'd like to hear it.

So much for my dislike (aesthetically) of red streaks. Gulp, I guess I just ate my own words.

Not the first time I'm sure.

Mike

What? The better ones are stiff, thin and light, vibrate when excited, and are easily bruised?

All this talk of red streaks making tops better, with the unimpeachable endorsement of Mr. Bourgeois, means there is something beyond mere coincidence, as some contend, that make them better. What, I'd like to know.

Also, again and again, I see comments that put down beauty in favour of function. Is there a law that says they're mutually exclusive? No. Rather, I submit, it is a form of reverse snobbery: the smug singular pursuit of tone is morally superior to the sham of transient beauty. Rubbish. I have seen stellar woods with tap tones to die for that look like a million. Euros not dollars. I just got one from Bill. Ernie, not all crumpets are made of sawdust upon contact. But I'm sure you had fun finding out.
