Here is a pic of sonoman's former SJ, which is currently my SJ. Not a great pic of the soundhole ring, but here it is:

Warren,
Dang, I like that. Can you show me a picture of the Headstock?

Is that the tortoise rosette that sonoman was reffering to?

Thanks for your help,
Mike

yup yup, that was mine, too. it's where the whole tortoise bound thing made it's way through my thick skull. the ring, the rosette, the fretboard: perfect. that IS the rosette, that is the ring, that is the look. right there. tom

OH, and Warren, you have yourself one great, and now increasingly rare, guitar. the next owner was the one that put the guard on it. It was nekkid when I had it. Treat her well. tom

Yes, Mike, that is the tortoise rosette and here is the headstock:

You're right, Tom. This is a great one... my favorite Collings. I've owned nine and still have three. I'm kinda fond of the guard and I need it for my playing style.

Again, I apologize for the photo quality. Not mine.

Yet another beneficiary of my stupidity. It's a growing club, unfortunately. If music be the food of love, play on. Will said that. Gig time. I said that. tom

It is a cedar top and its a keeper. Big time. Tom said it had "country bacon fat trebles". He was right! It shatters every preconception I had about cedar. It will handle just about everything I can give it.

Mike, the back and sides are very dark East Indian Rosewood. Lovely grain.

Damn. Anything you know about a cedar topped guitar (e.g. Lowden, good as they are) is blown to kindling by a Collings. Pity they stopped making them, 'cause they were masters at it. I bought it new from Podium. It was the first of its kind made, after a prototype, and I doubt they made ten of them, and probably not that many. Just luscious. My only solace is that the funds that came from that sale went to float The Alien. but I still miss it sometimes. Like now. Lemme say this: if another of them came up for sale, I'd think strongly about making some irrational move to snap it up. Ain't no more being made. best, tom
