quote: The only temptation I'd have is the ultra-subtle tortoise binding around the neck and headstock, with that tiny, almost imperceptible ivoriod purfling tracing, oh so gently, the outline of the whole guitar. Very cool, and understated to the inth degree.
OK...Now youv'e got me thinking...I am going to look into that. Initially, I gave no thought to Hot-Rodding my Retirement Guitar. But with all this inspiration, I am going to do more research of subtle upgrades. This is going to be with me, till you know when....why not make the most of it....to a point. MIke

sorry. I wouldn't have mentioned it had I not owned a guitar so decorated (it was a maple/adi C10 that I sold to fund you know what). Very, very classy, and suitably understated. I'm sure some sites have close ups of tortoise bound beasts. If I find one, I'll let you know. Or, Collings might have an example they can show ya via jpegs. tom

okay. one tortoise bound example: O1 mahogany on The Music Emporium's site, first page, bottom. Shows the headstock very plainly, that exquisite tiny ivoroid purfling line. Not a perfect parallel to what you're concocting, but then none of those exist. Yet. tom

sonoman, Kind of like this? Look closely at the Fretbaord. Like this? Is that it? Mike

Yes. It looks, obviously, far different on a hog top, but the fretboard and peghead are just that. And the soundhole ring on the hog is barely visible, although it's subtle on a spruce top as well. best tom

sonoman, Man that is really Beautiful. I think I really like it. But I would need to change my headstock overlay back to Ebony instead of rosewood. That really is an EXQUISITE and LUXURIOUS look. Like the Headstock and Fretboard are wearing a TUXEDO! But I'm not following you on the Soundhole Ring (Rosette). Is ther something different or special about the one in the picture? Best, Mike

re The Ring: no, it's not different, it's just that there less contrast between mahogany and the binding than there is between spruce and the binding. It's more an accent in either case (in addition to whatever function it serves, as I've described). It does prevent, or inhibit, erosion, but it also has that Fred Astaire thing goin' on. tom

I've asked Kim to post pictures of the CJ when it arrives. They actually know how to do it right, so you've a good chance of seeing it within two. Or three. Or four. Or more. Weeks. OR months. tom
