Hi folks,
Some of you may be familiar with the OnLine Guitar Archives ("O.L.G.A."). On OLGA websites, you could access lyrics and chords to thousands of popular songs free of charge. The recording industry threatened legal action against the OLGA websites, claiming that it was copyright infringement to put an artist's material out there without compensating the artist or the recording industry. Currently on YouTube, you can access thousands of videos of people playing popular songs on guitar. Not only are the words and chords able to be viewed, but the person shows the viewer how to play the song. It's probably only a matter of time before legal action is threatened here also. Any thoughts ? God bless, "louisiana" |

OLGA folding was a tragedy. They never should have caved under pressure, but of course the recording industry does have a strong lobby and it probably wasn't worth the risk for OLGA. I wish I had unlimited funds - I would have hired the attorneys myself.
Who was really pissed off was the publishers of sheet music - that's who was losing business to OLGA, but ultimately it's only about money, even if the public had a right to access a "user-contributed" list of chords and lyrics that may or may not have been correct. |
