When we visited Austin a few years ago we made multiple visits to the Continental Club and the Broken Spoke. We didn't get to 6th Street much, yet still had a great time. Also visited the original Salt Lick Barbeque in Driftwood, which we loved. We did not much care for the fancier Salt Lick nearer to Austin.

Salt Lick in Driftwood - Yes, most definitely.
Any other Salt Lick - Enter at your own risk.

If you like the rock n' roll and/or college vibe, 6th street.

If you like the Bohemian/artsy vibe, South Congress (not as many music venues but Continental Club and few other places with music, plus cool retail and good restaurants).

The only REAL Salt Lick is in Driftwood. All others are bizarro-world faux BBQ establishments.

I own some guitars & other musical stuff

Yes, Collings is closed on Saturdays.....but, you may want to call and speak with Steve. Tell him you've sold the house, pawned the car, starved the kids to make this pilgimage to Austin which will be incomplete without a visit to the Shrine of St.Bill. You may be surprised at what he can make happen. Tell him you don't want the full tour with guitar juggling employees etc, just a sniff of the varnish room.

Salt Lick Drftwood, fer sure. And, if you're into wine, the best wine shop in the Southwest is the most incongruous, grungy looking Cenetennial on Guadalupe. Since I know you Collings owners have expensive taste, yes, rest assured, they do have some decent $10K bottles. 10% discount if bought by the case. And for a quick, excellent bite at ridiculously reasonable prices, I'd pop into Central Market, just off Guadalupe. Hey, why not get a nice Ch.Petrus at Centennial then go to Central Market for a memorable lunch?

Las Palomas Restaurant not only has great Mexican food but normally they have live Jazz at around 7pm ...and if George Strait isn't touring the guitar and bass player in the Jazz combo are from George Strait's Ace in the Hole band. Only in Austin...

Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas for the trip. Austin is definetly a great place to visit. we only had a day but was much fun.

accomodations - Austin motel, great
breakfaast el sol, very clean
guitars - Quincy's, Pat is a great guy, sorry the BZ D2H was packed for shipping, has a great goodall 12 string and many others, very nice shop.
dinner - guerros, best marguerittas ever
evening - bats at congress, walk thru market district, back to pool at AM

sunday - coffee then meandering drive thru hill country, headed for salt lick but turned east to Smitty's (bbq heaven) couldn't eat for days.

Texas people are great, beautiful state, needs some rain.
