Hi folks,
Has anyone ever participated in one of those guitar building summer camps? These lutherie "camps" are geared to amateurs and are usually about a week long. Included in the tuition price are room & board and the supplies necessary to build an acoustic or electric guitar ... under the supervision of an experienced luthier. I think it would be very cool! God bless, "louisiana" |

Lou, are you thinking of going to one? I just had a private conversation with another member about them. I have never been, and learned most of the stuff I do by myself. But I've talked to, and chatted with quite a few who have. This is what I've been told..... The week long classes are good for many things and not so good for others. Classes are typically 12 hours, and if you are an excited enough boy, it's great! They generally tend to be not much 'teaching' and a whole lot of 'doing' with a ton of supervision. A month after the course, you wont remember many of the small details, and a few of the big ones. You WILL have a guitar out of the deal though, and THAT seems to be the reason most people go, not for the learning. I can think of a few other reasons , both pro and con. Should I go on?

i would love to build mando's. i think the way i would start is to get a kit, build that, then go to a camp so i would have my questions ready and have put some serious time into learning first rather than show up green. on the other hand building takes away from picking time so...
