One of my favorite all time nights of listening to live music was Clapton sitting in with Buddy Guy's band at the New Orleans house in Berkeley. Eric was in the Bay Area with Cream to play the Fillmore, their first ever gig in the US. We were there. Eric was still playing his SG Les Paul, and we got to sit in a small club, maybe ten yards away, and watch him burn the place to the ground. Just phenomenal. To top it off, we got to talk to him outside between set where he stepped out for a, um, well, smoke. Unforgettable. Long before Unplugged, from the Yardbirds on, I've been a Clapton man. If our first child had been a boy, he was gonna be Eric. But, thanks be to God, she was Jenny, named after the lake in the Tetons. She'll be 35 in August. I'm showin' some mileage, but hey.

Cool story Dave. Seen Clapton live twice now, the last time just this past Oct. Great player, period.

BTW, my little girl was also a "Jenny". At least a Jennifer. Unfortunately she is no longer with us.

Nice historic photo, Walt. It illustrates the problem that I have heard led the group to abandon their attempt to rise to bluegrass stardom: Paul wasn't comfortable trying to sing while playing the doghouse, and they were constantly having to switch instruments for his vocals. Ringo had the mando chop down, but never settled in on the standup bass, so they finally just said, "Sod it."

Great picture! And great story there Sonoman,

I saw Eric Clapton in concert in Feb this year. He only played one acoustic tune (solo) and seldom play any lead with his Fender, not even famous songs like Old Love, Layla... a big big disppointment!!

He had two guitarists with him in the concert and they played all solos in most of the songs (and they were long!! Almost 3-4 minutes per guitarist!) They were great players but just don't have the depth in their playing when compare to EC. And that also mean that Eric don't even have to sing much as well.

I wonder if he did the same in the State or if he treat foreign markets differently. I own and love all his Concert DVDs but this will probably be the first and the last time I'll see him in Concert. It was just not the same as his DVDs. The most disappointed Concert I attended in many years.

Ed, it was NOT like that in Orlando last Oct for sure. Eric played and played some more. He did use other guitarists, including Derek Trucks on slide, but he played the strings off that strat.
He did Old Love with Robert Cray swapping licks with him.
Sorry you didn't get the full monty. Perhaps he was sick, or just worn out from the tour. After all, he ain't no spring chicken any more.

Sonoman, errrrrrrrrr, Tom, love that Clapton story. Seems we both saw the same tour. The very first concert I ever saw was during Cream's first US tour; saw them at Hunter College in NYC. To this day, one of my favorite albums is John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Frankly, I don't think Clapton has sounded as good since; would have loved to have heard THAT band playin in a small room. Clapton's licks back then would have blown the doors off the place. And if we are going to trip down memory lane, my second concert was, now get (or should I say, dig) this, starting from the beginning, a bill of The Soft Machine, The Chambers Brothers (yeah, they did "Time"), The Who, and.........wait for it.......The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The Who destroyed their equipment and, of course, Jimi just had to light his Strat on fire to top Pete. Well, enough of my "back in the day" stories, I think I'll put on Stefan Grossman and Danny Kalk's "Crosscurrents", and play a few blues licks on my OM-2HASB. Oh yeah!

Gotta chime in here. Apparently, I'm as old as you guys - I saw Clapton with Blind Faith at Madison Square Garden. Needless to say, great show with opening acts Free and Delaney & Bonnie and Friends (including Dave Mason). They played on a slowly revolving stage in the middle of the hall. This was the tour that hooked Clapton up with The Dominoes and D&B and Friends.
And Danny Kalk, I mean Kalb. Saw The Blues Project many times in the days when I would take the Blue Star bus to NYC from Plainfield for $2 and go Downtown to the Café Au Go Go or The Fillmore to see whoever was playing for a few dollars. Ah, pre-Woodstock before The Suits realized there was money in Rock & Roll.
