I'd go with "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Betraying my age again. My take on smoking: it's a poor choice, and public health menace, so the exclusion from close public places is appropriate. But it's legal. More than legal, it's subsidized. As a civil rights issue, it's so far down the scale with me it barely registers. Food. clothing shelter. mercy. smoke if ya gottem; just stay downwind! tom
I toured for years with a banjo picker who was a heavy smoker, sometimes i would look across at a gig and he would have 2 lit and smoking stuck onto his peghead strings, of which one was certainly tobacco filled. I never smoked, or discovered a good way of getting the smell from the guitar or case. but interested to know how.

Yes, the baking soda thing works...to a degree, but the more you use it the marginally decreasing benefits makes it cumbersome.
Post Desert Storm I sent a bunch of ozone machines to Kuwait to a client who used them very, very effectively in removing smoke smell in major buildings from the oil fires that were set off. Now a friend here in Dallas uses the ozone machines to remove the quite revolting smell of his flamingos' post digestive leavings. In short, ozone generators work immediately and effectively. If you can find one I'd give it a shot.
WARNING Just wanted to chime in that using ozone generators in non ventiled areas can be dangerous. I Purchased some air purifier/ozone generators from sharper image (ionic breeze)that have been recalled and some lawsuits are pending. They release too much ozone. Im sure there are some safe products but you must have proper ventilation or they make the air worse and can be quite dangerous. Be carefull and do research on what ever device you choose. It seems that any ozone generating device that runs constantly indoors is a bad idea, they actually can do damage to asthmatics and people with breathing problems. Its sad because those people with breathing issues are the oneswho buy such devices.
CC: seems as if I've heard that ozone helps to break down certain rubbers or plastics. Don't know if that's old info, but would a high ozone concentration possible affect the guitar finish? Don't know, just asking. Of course you could use it to clean the case, and then the smell would be partially absorbed over the next month by the clean case, to be cleaned again. Plus I don't really see why the baking soda inside the guitar has to be contained in a bag, unless you've got electronics in there. If it isn't too humid, couldn't you just sprinkle some inside and shake it? It should brush out easily and probably be more effective that way.
Of course Tony Rice just submerged his in his basement for a few days in hurricane Hugo (or Andrew?). That probably was a real smoke smell purging experience. But then how do you get rid of dead fish smell?
gb, I poked around and found nothing that suggests that ozone would damage any material that is used in Collings guitars. Prolonged (years) of exposure causes cracking in natural rubber but since there isn't any of this stuff on your guitar you should be OK. Also, you're going to circulate ozone inside the cavity for about 30 minutes!!!! Don Diego is correct that inhaling large quantities of ozone can be harmful. So can large quantities of varnish, nitrocellulose, glues, acetone, and other finishes used by Collings. Studies at MIT have shown that large quantities of Twinkies can also be harmful.
EPA and OSHA have established safe ozone concentrations for ozone generators. If they happen to malfunction it's unintended. They weren't designed to produce more than industry standards. Ozone has long been the standard in the garment industry in removing odours, especially that of smoke. The particularly smelly and persistent odour in cigarette smoke comes from a chemical called acrolein which is very effectively neutralized by ozone. Get rid of acrolein and you'll get rid of the smell.
Paper or cloth bag full of freshly ground coffee, bung it inside the guitar & leave it for a week...hazelnut coffee works even better..if you don't mind the smell of coffee that is!
Marc, I knew a guy from Winnipeg who used to clean the West End Cultural Center everyday. Big carpeted hall it was. The last thing he would do everyday was to grab two of those aluminum foil redimix coffee bags and sprinkle them everywhere in the hall. Any hall could smell a lot worse than coffee!... Kerry K
