I have decided to sell my 2001 VJ. Mahogany/sitka sunburst. I have owned 2 of these guitars and they are great guitars. The first (rosewood/adi) I sold because of the neck profile (too thin for my liking) although it sounded wonderful.
This particular guitar has been my main gigging guitar since I bought it (probably 2003). It's neck has a little more girth than the other and of course 1 3/4 nut. I bought it used from Charles Johnson up in Richmond Virginia (vintage mandolin guy). I had the neck reset a couple years ago and the guitar refretted with taller frets. All this work was done by Master Luthier Mark Cane at www.fatsoundguitars.com. During the last year I had it worked on by Bryan Kimsey (basically set up) and he glued a little slab of rosewood on the bridgeplate as well as put in water buffalo pins (I still have the ebony ones). I was really tweaking the guitar to get the very best out of it and these were his recommendations....it was my baby. Action is about 7/64 (little less) and 5/64 at 12th fret with maybe.008 relief. It also has a KK mini installed (like I said, it has been a workhorse for me and all my guitars have this pickup in them). I have used this guitar on a couple recording projects so you can certainly hear it. It has a huge warm low end regardless of string gauge. I usually use lights and at times replace the trebs with 17 and 13. My personal opinion about the tone of the guitar is that it is better at fingerstyle and strumming than single line lead stuff but most slopes are. It is very responsive to a light touch and will suduce you with it's low end. I have played many VJ's and this is typical of the mahogany sitka ones I have played (that had any age on them). Reason for sale is that I have bought a short scale Gibson that I like better and I can't keep both. Really that simple. $1850.00 shipped. if you are interested in pics, email me at markwillplay@earthlink.net and I will send you a few. I have a bunch. Here are some of it in action. http://www.markcrawfordwilliams.com/gallery01.htm |
