Thompson T2x Braz/Adk
I just recently purchased this from Paul Asbell, after having it upgraded with Waverly Tuners. I couldn't figure out shipping it Internationally. Sadly, I must sell this within the State. Description: I've got FS a Thompson T2x that was ordered from noted high-end specialty dealer Moses Tey a couple of years back. For those who don't know about Ted Thompson, his guitars are usually mentioned in the same breath as Kevin Ryan, Jim Olson, Santa Cruz, etc... his work is specifically compared to Bill Collings', both sonically and in perfection of "fit and finish". This guitar's got Master-grade Brazilian Rosewood BS, and an Adirondack Spruce top. All woods and the headstock overlay are from Moses' stash, and quite impressive- the Adirondack top is flawless, and has nice cross-grain silking, which you rarely see in even the finest Adirondack tops. The Brazilian is about as nice as you'll find in recent years... The T2x size is slightly larger and deeper than Ted's standard T2 size. At 14.7" wide and 4.25" deep at lower bout, it's approximately 000/OM-sized. It has a classic 12-fret construction, which gives this smaller body a fuller, sweeter sound. Unlike Ted's customary spare aesthetic, this guitar has a number of stunning custom-order appointments.... abalone rosette, beautiful koa/ebony purflings around top, sides, back, backstrip and rosette, extremely curly maple binding around body and neck, Ted's distinctive logo in Mother-of-Pearl on headstock , and abalone sidedots on neck. The guitar was also ordered with a significant neck upgrade option, though you don't see it... in Moses' words..."the truss rod is there, but there also are two massive graphite rods embedded in the neck in parallel. It is internal so it does not detract from the mahogany one piece neck's visual appeal. The rods are each 3/8 by 1/4" which is thicker than most luthier's graphite. The only other builder I know of who does this and charges under $5000 is Charles Fox. A lot of other high end makers do this too but use graphite that I am quite sure is thinner. It basically adds some sustain and better highs without detracting from mids and lows." It's got slightly customized neck dimensions... 1 23/32" nut width, and a slightly shallower than usual slightly "V" shape neck, copied from a Bourgeois OM. It's fairly standard, very well executed by Ted and extremely comfortable. It also upgraded with Waverly Tuners with Ebony Buttons. The guitar has been played in studio sessions and at home, but has seen no gigs, smoke, etc. It looks as new as any guitar in a showroom. A while back, Ted won an award in Acoustic Guitar magazine for his instruments. It's rare to see his instruments FS, and even RARER to see one of this top-of-the-line nature (except Bart Ghormley's!). It's a fabulous guitar, sonically, visually, and definitely playability-wise. Unfortunately, I'm starting to find the 12 fret limitation vexing. I still love it, but have enough other wonderful instruments so that it gets a bit lost in the shuffle. Whoever buys this guitar will have a stunning, deeply satisfying instrument that, if properly cared for, will be a "lifetime instrument" AND can be expected to appreciate in value over time. Asking $3800. E-mail for JPEG's, or more info. Edison Sam esam@mac.com [This message was edited by Ed on March 16, 2003 at 05:59 PM.] |
