Will be traveling to the gathering via airline. I have a Calton case for my D1A and have confirmed with Delta that I can check the guitar "at the gate".

I will loosend strings, put some bubble wrap under the headstock.

I would appreciate any tips to help ensure a safe journey. Do you recommend fragile stickers ? Stickers that say "Don't expose to direct heat" ?

Thanks,
Randy Bauer

The last time I flew, I carried a Calton case right onto the plane. It fit in the overhead without a problem.

I believe most carriers are now allowing guitar cases to be stored onboard. I hope you have the good fortune I had.

I've flown a bunch with a Calton...it totally depends on the particular plane and the folks who check you in. While most often, I'm able to carry it on, or at least gate-check it, I end up having to check it at the counter pretty regularly.

With a Calton, I've loosened the strings a bit, supported the headstock and let 'er rip down the luggage belt....So far, the worst thing I've had is a lot of moisture on the outside of the case....I wiped it off and it was fine...a few scratches, etc...But, the guitar has always made it fine.

Next week I'm recording another CD at The Congress House in Austin, so I'm shipping my D1A varnish, D2BaaaAvarnish, MF5varnish, and maybe my fiddle to the recording studio and I'll be flying with NO instruments...It'll feel so weird to fly without a guitar....I'm looking forward to that.

Good Luck on your travels...see y'all in TEXAS!

Shiner Bock? Tito's Handmade Vodka? Mexican Martini?

Allen - I read somewhere that a person locked their case and TSA or whomever the security was at the time tore the clasps apart opening the case to inspect.

I might be inclined to leave it unlocked.

Norman - I am flying a CRJ 700 Regional jet. After checking with Delta, the overheads are a no go. Frown

If you want to ship your guitar so it's in a box and insured, I'm happy to receive it for you. I can then put it back in the box and have UPS pick it up Monday for you. The shop is just 15 minutes from the Salt Lick. E-mail me at kevin at hillcountryguitar dot com.
