I was just over at Quincy's Guitars here in Austin talking to the owner Pat Skrovan about a regular acoustic jam night he and I had previously talked about starting at his place. This would be a small after hours acoustic jam/song circle and, probably, a little wine tasting (Pat's a wine collector and, as coincidence would have it, I'm a wine drinker; a match made in heaven but headed for hell, I'm sure Smile). Anyway, we're going to try this the first Thursday of every month from 7:00-9:00 at Pat's store. The first one will be Thursday, May 5. If you are interested I need you to email me or post here and let me know so we can get an idea of how many to expect. Any brand of guitar or other acoustic instrument is welcome. This is not a Collings specific event in any way. So, let me know if you think you'll be there.

Thanks,
Allen

Just bumping it to the top. The first jam is coming up this coming Thursday night. I hope to see y'all there.

Btw, I'll be heading over directly from work. If anyone wants to meet somewhere for a taco and a beer or three before heading over to Quincy's Guitars for the jam let me know.

Allen

We had our first jam last night. Six folks of varying styles showed up and we visited and played together for a couple hours. Everything from 60s rock to folk to classical to blues to a couple mangled country and southern rock tunes (me Roll Eyes). Thankfully there was enough talent in the room to pick up the pieces and move forward after I crashed and burned. It was a good time with a very eclectic mix of styles. Lots of fun.

Special thanks to Pat Skrovan of Quincy's Guitars for being a great host and his wife RoseAnn for providing some scrumptious pork tenderloin and rolls to munch on.

We'll be doing it again next month. Come on out if you can.

The June jam will be next Thursday, June 2, 7:00-9:00 p.m. If you think you'll be able to make it give Pat Skrovan at Quincy's a call or an email to let him know you'll be there.

We just had our 3rd jam this past Thurs night. They've all been a lot of fun and each one has had a different feel to it. The jams are free form and get a little chaotic at times, but we have always had a strong player and singer or two to pull us through. I'm really enjoying the jams and I'm much less nervous about playing and singing in public now than I was at the first one.

I do want to publicly thank Pat Skrovan, the owner of Quincy's Guitars, for hosting this monthly jam. Pat and his wife define hospitality. Pat is a very gracious host and, for the past two jams, he's been holding up the bottom on acoustic bass. Thanks again, Pat.

Hey, I'd like to be in the jam if that's okay, but I'm only 13 years old... My friends family personally knows Bill, and that led me to google, and I found this site... It seems like a pretty cool site, but being 13, I obviously can't afford one... I have a Seagull M6 that's good enogh for me, but there's no pickup or anything on it... Do they have mics there, or is the jam "unplugged"?

I've been looking for people to jam with in Austin, but all the open mics I've been to have either been canceled, or they won't allow me to play...

I can play basic rythyms of all sorts and genres pretty easily, and can improv. okay for blues and rock (I think, at least)... I've been playing for about 1 year, but please give me a chance! If I completly ruin everything, it'll be a lesson learned, but I'd really like to try...

Thanks in advance, and you can email me at nateguitar12@gmail.com ...

Thanks again!

Nathan, I'll check with Pat the owner of Quincy's and see what he thinks, but this particular jam is really an adult situation with adult beverages being consumed. I'll let you know through email.

Nothing wrong with a Seagull, btw. Nice guitars.

As for finding folks to jam with have you checked out craigslist.com? There's one for Austin and you can post a personal ad on there under the musicians section and try to hook up with folks more your age. I've seen quite a few teens post on there. Good luck.

Allen

Okay, thanks anyway. You don't have to ask the owner, it's fine. I'll definatly check out Craigslist though...

We had our best attended jam yet last night. I think we ended up with over 15 players dropping by eventually. A couple other forum members were there and Steve McCreary from Collings stopped by and picked with us for awhile. It was a big time and, as always, Pat was an excellent host. I'm always impressed by the quality of players who show up at this jam. We've had some excellent pickers and singers and last night was no different.

If you haven't already, I encourage each of you to find others to play with if you so desire. It is a lot of fun. Don't worry about not being as good a player or singer as others. Just get out there and do it. These guys have tolerated my ham fisted playing and over the top singing for four jams now and I think they are actually starting to enjoy it somewhat. Smile I know I've really had a blast playing with and getting to know all these people over the past few months.
