WELL, I never thought it would happen. I have had my MF for over 2 years, and played a lot of other Mandos during that time. And I never found one that I thought sounded or played any better than my MF.
Until NOW. I had waited for the MF Oval to come out, and got one of the very first ones shipped. And it is taking control of my Mando playing by leaps and bounds. Big full throaty sound to it that just keeps coming. For my style of playing it is just fantastic. I am not a BG player by any means, and not that much of a Mando player, but this Oval thing is just amazing me every time I pull it out For the first time since I picked up the Mando I have one that outshines my MF. Figures it would be another Collings ! Rick A few too many ! |

Hard to desribe, but I'll try.
The F hole is sharper sounding and seems to chop BG a bit better. The Oval has a BIG deep throaty sound to it. It's louder and fuller sounding as well. I have actually found myself having to tone down my playing a bit with it in some situations. It's that loud. I am not a BG player and for me and my style the Oval is much better suited. I play with some friends quite a bit, folk songs, originals and some covers etc. The A style Oval hole I had was not as deep or loud sounding. It was much more of an open "airy' sound. The F style really cranks out the sound. Rick A few too many ! |

Interesting that there is that much of a difference between an F vs A style oval soundhole. I was lucky to come across a 1919 Gibson A4 in all original condition that really turned me onto oval mando's. Like Rick, I'm not a real bluegrass player, playing more folk and country and I love the rounder more "meaty" sound of the oval. I'll be looking to play the MF oval to hear that power first hand. Wow, surprized me to see this thread come back up. But yep, I am still an Oval Junkie. Had it out to the open mic tonight, and even did a little BG with it. I find that lately I take the F hole to the BG jam I go to once in a while. Those folks just seem to think I should play the F hole. but the Oval is still my fav of the two. Now that doesn't mean I'll be dumping the F hole any time soon. Unless Bill gets those new Mandolas out tot he public that is.

I recently bought a 1924 Gibson Snakehead. I love it. The sound is so much more musical to my ears. Bach sounds incredible on it. That being said, I took it to a bluegrass festival this weekend. BG players are NOT into ovals. It's just not loud enough or cutting to satisfy the Bill Monroe types. And I'm fine with that. I have a custom F that is as loud as they come. Each has their place, but I love that ol' Snakehead.
