Del Grosso's record is great, and the Yank tribute record that I believe he organized is too.

There's some mandolin on Ry Cooder's first couple of albums. Billy the Kid, and Goin to Brownsville. Check Youtube too.

Bill Monroe's music wasn't too far from the blues either. Evening Prayer Blues, out of print and not reissued but covered nicely by Mike Compton, comes to mind first, but any of the stomps qualify.

Jefe- you probably knew all this- I just thought that someone following the thread might like a couple of other sources.

A recent Robert Johnson cd purchase has peaked my interest in the blues. In the electric world, I grew up listening to BB King and SR Vaughn.

Here is a good mandolin blues starter link:
http://www.mandolinblues.com/

You sometimes hear the question asked, "Which guitar makes a good blues guitar?" I can play blues on my red sparrowhawk Indian flute. It is in the key of G and is pentatonic. That's pretty close to Gm that is my bluesy guitar scale.

Blues was played on whatever instrument you could get. An old worn out bass, a banjolin or a guitar with mojo.

I believe that I will do a little blues noodling this afternoon. I'll see if I can find my blues mandolin.

El Jefe,Hope you find yer Blues and greens and reds....all the colors of the mando rainbow.

I know this isn't mando related but the other day I heard the old Bonnie Raitt cut Give It Up Or Let Me Go and that National gitar intro is BLUES...it's THE sound as authentic as any old Blues sounds from the 20's/30's etc. Whatever happened to THAT Bonnie Raitt? Her first 2 or 3 recordings were so great then somebody put a shine on her.

Here/hear on Strat.

Here's my favorite new blues mandolin player. He has two excellent instructional DVD's out on Homespun Tapes.

As far as Rich Del Grosso goes I understand he has an acoustical CD out with a female guitarist from Australia.

Now what's the name of that great blues mandolin player from Kentucky? Oh yeah, Bill Monroe.

El Jefe, I know Austin is a long way from El Paso, but thought some might be interested: Rich DelGrosso is going to be in Austin this weekend and is holding a Blues Mandolin Workshop at the Fiddlers Green on Saturday March, 7th from 1 - 4pm.
