i think we need to compare engelmann from one builder to the same builder's model with adi and then decide what the difference is.
Heiden uses a very thick top. which makes it a bit stiffer than let's say Smith Creek. a builder's technique is as unique to his sound as his headstock logo. that said, of all the oval holes i own and have owned the collings is one that seems to have a more all around appeal. (it does a very nice Bluegrass Stomp). |

I agree that's the best way to compare woods. But even then I still think Collings makes a darn fine Engleman topped mandolin. I've always been impressed with the MT, especially for the price.
I also think that top wood on a mando makes less of a difference than it does on guitars. When it comes to guitars, I'm an adi guy all the way. I've played very few sitka or Engleman guitars that really caught my attention. |
