advise for new mando ???

Howdy

I'm lucky enough to own a very fine F hole (F style) and a very fine oval hole. I would sell the oval hole way before the F hole. F hole mandolins are more versatile in my opinion.

That said don't even bother with an F style (meaning with the scroll) unless you want to spend money on looks.

An A style F hole like an MT-2 used would be your best bet . As someone mentioned loads of good used ones at great prices. I once owned an MT-2H and ended up selling it for dirt cheap...it's a buyers market especially now. Also I would suggest a standard width neck; you won't notice much of a difference but you'll have a better resale value down the road if you decide to sell.

Good luck!

To the OP, go to the classifieds right now. Maplebaby has just what you need at a killer price. It will do anything you want and more as a starter and a keeper.

Yes what Rick said. That's a great looking mando and it's all you'll ever need. Unless you eventually buy it a friend.

Maplebaby's MT is the one. It already has the $150 plus shipping optional pickguard on it. I own one of Mapebaby's former mandos. He's a great guy to do business with. Dan

Well.... thanks for all the advice. I couldnt resist a used MF I located thru Mandolin Cafe... hand delivered today and it's absolutely beautiful. It's the Tobacco SB with Ivoroid binding. Serial #774. Anyone know how old this would make it? I've been noodling all day. Wonderful. Certainly way more than I need or deserve, but it sure is inspiring.

I'll upload pics tomorrow
