Anyone have trouble with the airlines lately carrying on a mandolin?

I've never tried it - but I assume there wouldn't be a problem. Just be prepared to surrender it to be packed "down below" if you run into someone who wants to show you how important they are. Pack it accordingly. And make sure to check any of the tools that would normally be in the case. Could anyones fevered imagination see them as a weapon?

I've carried a mando on several times with no problem. It is small enough to qualify...do be careful what else is in the case.

I just got a Calton for the mandolin, Shaun. It's size is what I was worried about. Sounds like no problem. Thanks

Carried mine on many times in a Calton. Never a problem. In fact, it seems that most airlines that I've flown in the past three years have been very accommodating to my dreadnaught sized Calton.

I travel with my Calton clad Collings often and have never had a problem or even a sideways look when taking on a plane.

Some covet my Calton clad Collings, but no complaints, comments or concerns from co-habiters of the cabin and, happily, no calamities.

Never had a problem carrying it on. Agree with those who recommend a case, however it's small enough that I've managed fine with just a gig bag on several occasions. The biggest danger is someone coming in behind you and putting weight on the mandolin, so obviously I watch like a hawk as others are boarding.

I'm tempting fate, however.
