We were jamming at church yesterday, and I picked up my friends' Collings MF. As I was putting the strap over my large frame, the endpin and strap all came out together. I thought I had broke it, but he said that it had been happening a lot lately, and felt it was due to the cold, since it had never done it in warm weather.

I popped it back in and played. It popped out a couple of more times before the day was over. I told him to contact Collings and have them send out a different/little larger endpin, which I'm sure they would, no prob.

Anyone else experience this?

I have had the end pin come out on my MF one time, and I have owned it for over 3 years now. I pushed it back in as tightly as I could and it has not come out since. But I do keep a closer eye on it now.

I figured that they could not glue in the end pin with the tail piece like it is. If you ever had to remove the tail piece a glued in pin would be a serious draw back. So I accepted it, and kept pickin.

I have had endpins slide out of every mandolin I have owned. It is usually caused by prolonged lower humidity which in turn will lead to things shrinking a bit. In my dry home it is a sign that I need to check that my instruments are adequately humidified. Additionally, I just snug mine up by hand and use a bit more caution in the winter months in general. Mine have never been problematic enough to warrant more drastic solutions.

There are all kinds of suggested remedies from players and luthiers over at the mandolincafe.com. Search the builder/repair section or do an advanced search on endpin, searching post titles only.

Thanks,
I will check that. The pin actually won't go in any farther, so pushing it in farther/tighter won't do the trick. By your right about Mandocafe - it is an awesome resource.
Thanks

For guitar pins (ebony) lots of folks apply a very thin coating of super glue and let the pin and glue thoroughly dry before re-inserting.

Perhaps knowledgable folks could comment on that very easy fix; i.e. if it would work for an end pin.

You would be surprised how little you may need to fill that void.
