Hi folks,

Happy Labor Day!

I'll be getting a new Collings varnish MF5 mandolin this week and was wondering how to properly clean/polish this type of finish.

Anyone have experience with maintaining a varnish finish instrument? Could you polish it with any of the products designed for lacquer finish instruments? I currently use the Ken Smith polish (that Taylor uses) on my lacquer finish instruments.

I have not contacted Collings with this question yet.

God bless,
"louisiana"

Hey there louisiana. I'm on my second varnish mandolin. In both cases, the makers both verbally and in writing, strongly suggested (as does Collings for their instruments), using a damp cloth moistened w/ water.i've had my latest mando about a month now and havent't dared do more than breathe on it and wipe it with a soft cloth. Good luck with your MF5V!
Regards
Doc
