If all goes as planned I will have the chance to try out a Collings MT this Sat. with the wide nut option.
I'm looking forward to it as I still find the standard neck on a Mando on the skinny side for my old, crooked fingers.
Anyone had the chance to try them and any input or things I should look for or be aware of?

If all else fails I'll just have to play the MF and MF5 they have there for comparison. LOL

Gibson now makes a mandolin with a wider neck. It's the Sam Bush model. The wider neck is also available on another model - I'm just not sure what the number is.

Spent a couple of hours yesterday going back and forth between about four different Collings Mandos.
My MT. an MT with the wide nut and at least a couple of F models. All the way up to an MF5 Deluxe.
I could see the difference in the nut width, I could feel the difference when I held the mando and strummed some chords etc. But when I got actually playing the things it didn't make any difference to me.
Does that make sense at all ?

I was sort of hoping it would be such a difference that I would immediately find it better suited for me, but that just was not the case. When I played them back to back to back I just couldn't find anything "better" about the wide nut.

So I traded off my MT and came home with a new MF with gloss top. To my ear this was the best sounding of the bunch, with a real good "crunch" to the bottom end.
Our very own Stixx could not resist and came home with the Oh so Shiny and beautiful MF5.
Maybe he'll chime in now that he has joined the Mando fraternity.

Chime in ,huh , that is about all I can do
right now . Got a couple of Hal Leanard books
on the way home from church. Chords are easy
enought to play and Rick , you were right
about holding the thing.

Anyway i can see a lot of practice is in order
so I found a guy here in Tucker that is a pro
mando player and I talked to his wife about
getting him to teach me enough to get me rollin.

It is such a differnt thing than playing finger
style and it felt really weird to have a pick
back in my hands but it is really easy on the
Collings with those monster frets to get a
clean note. I will start practice as soon as
I can get a teacher to put on track. I wont
make the mistake of perfecting mistakes first
and have to unlearn a bunch of stuff so i reckon
I'll get back to yall as that develops.

I should thank Rick for needing someone to go
along on his trip to bama cuz i've been wanting
a Collings mando for two years but figured i'd
learn to play it first. Well now I got to after
blowing all that dough on one
