It looks like I will be joining the Mandolin family soon with a trade for a new Collings MT with some "extras" to it. I have a small basic understanding and can do some simple chords etc. I've been using my Cavaquinho to practice on some.
What I need is a recommendation of a good beginner level book that will help me with some of the scales and patterns used in picking.
Any suggestions from the learned here?

I sure like the Homespun video tapes and CD's. The Butch Baldaseri set on begining bluegrass is a good way to start. Try www.homespun.com

Ah, good suggestion. I get their catalogs all the time, but usually just look at the guitar stuff.
Thanks, I'll check it out.

Yes I thought the Chris Thile DVD was a good one too. He spends a lot of time on things like holding the pick, hand positions ect. Make sure you get it eventually.

Well the new little SB baby is home with me.
I actually found a couple of really good books at the shop where I got it.
One is all the basic chord forms and the other is ALL the picking patterns and scales any three people could ever use. 1300 in all I think.
I'll be busy for a while, IF I live that long.
