I have a Collings mando strap (cool) but I'm not sure how it goes on an MT A style. I can see that one end just goes on the end pin but how does the other end with the leather tie work? Do I tie it around the head stock or what? Any tips and or links to photos that may help would be much appreciated. Confused

I don't have a Collings strap, however I just tie the ends around the headstock, threaded under the strings behind the nut.

Hey Steve,

Congratulations on your new MT. If you are having half the fun I'm having with mine, you are having a blast!

When I bought my mandolin, I asked mandolinist and shop owner Danny Bishop about attaching a strap. His preference for A's is to loop the "scroll loop" around the narrow upper end of the body underneath the fingerboard extention. I have a different strap than the Collings, but I have followed his recommendation and it seems to work fine. I can't tell from looking at the picture on the Collings Website, but it looks as if that scroll loop is adjustable, so this technique should work for that strap, too? YMMV Cheers!

Steve,

I had a Collings strap installed on my MT under the fingerboard extension...just sort of tied that end under the extension with a knot. When it came loose later, I never bothered to reinstall it. But I think a rawhide "shoe string" would be better to use as the under-fretboard loop since it's a lot thinner than what came with the strap originally.

Thanks Guys! The leather tie that came with the strap seems a bit short and thick to tie under the fret board extension so I may have to get a raw hide shoe string or try what Seth says.
Yes, the MT is a real blast and is great to play for a change from the guitar. although I'm a complete novice. It is a surprise Xmas/Birthday present for my wife so I have it hidden and I only get it out when I'm the only one at home. Hey, I'm only trying to break that top in for her! Wink She has been wanting a mando for a while so I hope she likes it. We are both members of the Bluegrass and Traditional Country Music Society here in Sydney and our music tastes is one of the first things we realised we have in common. We are going to get over there (Nashville etc) to have our own Bluegrass Holiday and see some of the artists we love so much.....Oops, I'm getting all mushy Smile
Thanks again.

You are so good to your wife, Steve. A paragon of thoughtfulness and generosity. I think it is particularly gracious of you to break it in for her. I'm touched. Roll Eyes In truth, my MT is as easy to fret as any mandolin I have played (not a huge number, admittedly, but several that are supposed to be great and are twice the price or more of the MT), and the tone is so sweet and pure that I just love to play a note or a passage and then just listen to it ring. I would think it would be the perfect one to learn on. And, well, if she doesn't like it, maybe you can figure out something to do with it.
