In some photos I've seen (such as the Pommeroy in the for sale section of our forum) there is a leather tie intertwined through the strings at the tail piece. Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of this? One of the print ad photos on the Collings site has the same thing, see Kim Warner's mandolin.

I think it's an attempt to eliminate some resonance or extra noise in the strings between the bridge and tailpiece.

I wondered if that might be the case. Thanks.
