Got an MT that I bought new about a year ago. I love the tone of this little jewel, and for my playing style I can get an excellent sound from it. However, I have noticed recently when jamming with others that I am unconsiously playing harder, and it seems to overdrive the top a bit. The tone gets a little harsh and not as pure sounding.

Is this a characteristic of the Engelman spruce? I am just wondering if I had a MT2 w/ Red Spruce top how it would perform in comparison. Anyone played both enough to comment?

I have a varnish Collings with Red spruce and a Nugget 2 point with Engleman top. If I wanted to compete with banjos and fiddles, which I don't, I'd string the Collings with Med/Heavy D'Ad...and it would kick ass...

Since I usually use a mic, record, and play mostly jazz on the mando, I prefer Thomastik Infelds stark strings and both mandos sound great...however, I can still drive the Collings more and there is a sweetness to the Engleman top...there are other variables, of course, but I think you'd find this consistent with what most would think...
