I set out to record a pop/rock tune with only acoustic guitar. There is vocals, bass and drums, but no electric guitars, no keyboards. There are 4 tracks of my Collings OM3C, one track of my Guild 12 strings and one bass track. The drums were recorded on several tracks and there are 2 tracks of vocal. This is pretty simple stuff here. Basically 3 chords, 5 notes and about 7 words, but I think it's fun. I think the acoustic carries it very well.

I updated the link to the new mix with Carl "The Wonder Dude" on bass guitar. I thought it rocked pretty well before, but Carl's bassline really makes it!

RB,

Sounds great. You're right, the acoustic carries it well. Did you mic the guitars, or do you have pickups?

Thanks Brett! I don't have any pickups, so this was all microphone. I used an AKG C414 on everything.

My next equipment purchase will be a good condersor mic. I've been operating with an SM-57 and am looking for something better. Opine on the AKG C414 for me. Did you consider others before that purchase?

Rockerbob,
tried to listen to your tune but the link isn't working anymore. went to Keith's page and listened to 'homeward'.

Nice tune.

Rocker B,
did you go through any preamps? The 414 is one my favorite mics, but it sounds better going into a tube mic pre - Avalon, etc...tried that yet?

Cheers,
B.

I have as bunch of stuff posted on an unpublished link. You should be able to tell by dates which are the latest. Driver's Seat, Sailor's Hornpipe and Hold On are the newest mixes.

No preamp. Since I'm pretty happy with the sound I get just using the mic preamps in the Mackie 8 buss board, a "real" preamp has been low on my list. Maybe someday, but I still have GAS pretty bad, so guitars always seem to rise to the top of the list.

I missed the question about the mic. I love the C414. It's the swiss army knife of studio microphones and sounds good on everything. I use it mostly for Acoustic guitar and vocals, but also percussion and anything, anything I need to mic. They sound great on the upright piano in the living room.

I guess I never really used any other good mics in my home studio. I have used SM58s and 57s for years and still have some, but quite a few years ago I decided to try a C414. I loved it and ended up getting another so I have a pair. I guess the down side is that although they are good on everything, they might not be the "best" for any given application. Oh well, I like them and I can't afford to have a bunch of different expensive mics. It would cut into my guitar budget too much. Smile
